Teaching and Learning experiences through and with the lens of Musical Journey
Description
CAFCA Matlosana Development project was established in February and officially launched in May 2009 with the support of a similar project from Mamelodi (Pretoria). CAFCA recruits youths with no or very little music experience. Instrument (Recorder) and Music lessons with skilled tutor is offered to them once a week. Goals of the project We aim to implement culture of learning, in particular appreciation of Music as an art form. We also seek to create an awareness for art, both as a joyous activity and as an alternative career among youth from previously disadvantaged communities. CAFCA also ensures that understanding of Musical concepts or theory should match with the practicum, that is integrating theory with musical instruments like, piano, clarinet, violin, bass guitar or woodwind instruments- recorder, saxophones, trumpet or trombone) in real time. We also plan to organize team building, leadership training and HIV/AIDS education. We emphasize on a non-competitive attitude towards Music, students are encouraged to help and learn from each other. Another important aim is enabling them to learn independently. The following musical instruments are taught: Guitar, Violin, Trumpet, Trombone, Saxophones, Piano, Drums, Percussion and Electric bass. Regular assessments ensure that everyone’s progress is followed and monitored. Since the year 2009 students from have been enrolled for formal music examinations at the Faculty of Music at the University of South Africa (UNISA). It is for these reasons that most of our students' performance is impressive. The students write Music Theory exams with UNISA - June 2010; 13 students wrote Grade 1 and five got distinctions on the same year seven wrote Grade 2 with four distinctions. June 2011; seven wrote Grade 1 with three distinctions and three merits and five wrote Grade 3 with three distinctions and two merits. October 2011;one wrote Grade 1 with distinction, one Wrote Grade 2 and seven wrote Grade 4 with three distinction and one merit. 2012 ; 3 students passed Grade 1, 4 passed Grade 2, 3 passed Grade 3 and 2 passed Grade 5. AWARDS 2010 - Ofentse Moshoetsi; Best student was given Lefifi Tladi' paintings. 2011 - Andrew Nyele; best student and Monde May; improved student.
